An Architect’s Collage Shopping List

Hi, I am Christian Hadzhivelikov and I am currently studying Architectural Technology in MTU. Not exactly and architect however we share a lost of similarities and I will be sure to point out any differences. I am also based in Ireland so this is taking into account you are studying in the EU but if you are not there still information here that is quite valuable.

Now, for the shopping list (the short version)

  1. A powerful laptop Minimum Specs: CPU i5, Memory 8GB RAM, GPU 3060

  2. A clutch pencil some leads and a small hard back notebook

  3. Adjustable setsquare (course specific)

  4. Some experience with model making (optional)

  5. An A1 drawing board (optional)

  6. Knowledge of Autodesk and some of the Software in it(optional)

Explanation

  1. The laptop is needed because you will be doing a lot of 3D modeling in this course you will often need to work on multiple programs at once and render pictures in high quality. The min specs I have listed were given to me by the collage Day 1! This is by far the most important purchase you need, you may not need it right away but in my experience sooner rather than later.

  2. This is quite specific however there is a good reason for all of this. Surveys are a big part of this course and you will often be going to specific building and taking down as much information as possible. The pencil will also be quite handy for your first year since there is quite a lot of graphic drawing.

  3. The reason the adjustable setsquare is course specific is i am not sure if you will be using is or a 30/60Deg and 45Deg set square. In my opinion it is best to wait for the collage to tell you which one it is you will be using.

  4. This doesn’t have be much even something as small a Warhammer model or a small cardboard house you will be making lots of models especially in first year. If you have a steady hand this is will help you stand out a bit more from all your collogues and get a head start in your course.

  5. This is the standard in Ireland again I am not 100% sure what you will need for you collage however if if cant afford one or you don’t have the room at home you should be provided with a high quality drawing board in collage. However be prepared to spend most of first year in front of your drawing board.

  6. This is might sound a like a bunch of nothing but I will explain. Autodesk is a the leading company in design and not only architects you Autodesk. Engineers Interior designers, and even the builders in some cases used Autodesk for their projects. The software you will need as an Architect will be AutoCAD and Revit. There are some other smaller ones you will also need to learn but this your starting point. Definitely start with AutoCAD since it is much more beginner friendly that Revit.

Conclusion

This course is very heavy on project work and you will have really push through it because it gets real tough at times. However you will end up getting a real group of friends and awesome career out of it. This is not a cheap course but its not extremely expensive either I wish you the best of luck in your Architectural Journey!
